A hydraulic jack is a high-pressure device whose longevity directly depends on regular inspection of mechanical parts and maintaining the integrity of the hydraulic system. Improper maintenance not only shortens the tool's service life but also poses a direct safety hazard in the workshop.
Regular Technical Inspection and Control
Before each use of the jack, a visual inspection must be performed. Key critical points:
- Piston condition: The working piston must be clean, free of corrosion marks or scratches. Even minor surface damage can damage the internal O-ring seals, leading to oil leakage.
- Lever and axle lubrication: Moving joints, wheels, and the lever mechanism must be periodically lubricated with thick grease to prevent mechanical wear of the metal.
- Structural integrity: Welds and frame geometry are checked. If any deformation or cracks are found, the jack's operation must be stopped.
Correct Storage
Storage conditions determine how quickly the hydraulic system's rubber components and valves will wear out:
- Piston position: The jack must always be stored with the piston fully lowered. This protects the precisely ground piston surface from corrosion and environmental effects and relieves tension from the return springs.
- Verticality: The jack must stand on its base. If the jack is tilted on its side, there is a risk of oil leaking through the air vents or air entering the working chamber.
- Environment: Store the tool in a dry, dust-free place. If possible, use a special cover to prevent dust from accumulating around the seals.
Selection of Hydraulic Oil
Only specialized hydraulic oil must be used in the system. It is strictly forbidden to use brake fluid, engine oil, or transmission fluid, as the chemical composition of these materials aggressively affects and damages the jack's rubber seals.
- Viscosity: It is recommended to choose ISO VG 32 or ISO VG 46 standard oil. If working in low temperatures (outdoor conditions in winter), it is advisable to choose an oil with a higher HVI (high viscosity index), which remains fluid even in cold weather.
- Change interval: For professional use jacks, it is recommended to completely change the oil at least once a year, while flushing the system to remove accumulated metal shavings and sediments.
